Scotland

August 10th 1916

Daddie, Mother, Charlie and I started from Wicklow at 6.26 p.m., and went on board the Magpie Burns Line, and started at 8.30.

August 11th. We landed at Wemyss Bayatt 8.45 after a calm crossing. A fog in the night, when the steamer had to go slowly, made us rather late. The foghorn was blown several times. We got to Glasgow about 11.30. we left it at 4 o'clock, and arrived at Crieffat 5.45. We took rooms in the Strathavon Institute, James Square, Crieff.

Aug 12th We looked for lodgings but found none. I read the Sky Pilot. Grouse shooting begins.

Aug 13th. In the morning we went to St. Columba's Episcopal Church of Scotland. Canon Meredith preached. In the evening we went to the Parish Church (Petby[?]). Mr Campbell preached.

Aug 14th. This morning we went for a drive about twelve miles by Strwan. We saw a monument to Sir David Bairst. We saw what was until 20 years ago the highest wooded hill in Scotland, when a great storm which blew down thousands of trees, cleared nearly all the trees off this hill. Charlie and I went for a bicycle ride in the afternoon past Gilmerton (?) In the morning we passed Ochtertyre.

Aug 15. This morning we went in a pony cart to look for lodgings. I wrote to Miss Humphries.

Aug 16. C and I went for a short ride and had an ice.

Aug 17. We went by train to St Fillans and had tea at the Drummon Arms Hotel and afterwards we went our in a boat on Loch Earn and rowed about for an hour.

Aug 18th. We left Crieff at 2.30 and arrived Sat 5.30 at Montrose. As we were disappointed in the lodgings we had to spend the night at the Star Hotel.

Aug 19th. We were recommended by the information officer to Mrs Low at Littlemill a mile and a quarter from Montrose where we went in the afternoon.

Aug 20th We rested.

Aug 21st. We went for a walk and saw the aerodrome. 4 g.m.

Aug 22nd. We went to the aerodrome in the evening and saw the aeroplane quite close. 4.g.m.

Aug 23rd. At 2.30 we started for a char-a-banc trip from Montrose to Edzell. On the way we passed through Lord Kintore's estate and crossed the North Esk as it flowed through a sandstone gorge. We had tea at Edzell at the Panmuir Arms Hotel. We came back by Trinity Perechin where there is a jute factory. We go back at 8.30.

Aug 24th. Nothing happened.

Aug 25th Very wet. Went to the town after tea. 4.g.m.

Aug 26th Still raining. Mother, C and I went to town in the afternoon.

Aug 27th We went to St Mary's Church in the morning. It was very wet.

Aug 28th. C and I went for a ride. At 2.30 we left Montrose for Edinburgh. We walked up Calton Hill and saw the Nelson Monument. We stayed at the Old Waverley Hotel, in Princes Street, and liked it very much.

Aug 29th. We had a beautiful day. We walked down Princes Street and then went to the Castle, where we saw Mons Mag, a cannon which is supposed to have been forged at Mons in 1493. Also we saw the very small room where James 1st was born. There was a very fine view from the Castle. then we drove past the Tolbooth and some very old houses and St Giles Cathedral, to Holyrood Palace. We saw Queen Mary's appartments and Lord Darnleys, and the Chapel. We saw the room where Rizzio was stabed. In the afternoon we went to see Roslyn Chapel, a beautifully carved building. One of the pillars is the Apprentice Pillar. we had a very nice afternoon.

Aug 30th We had a most beautiful trip to-day. We left Edinburgh at 9.6 a.m. and went by train to Callender. On the way we changed at Stirling where we saw the National Monument to William Wallace and also Stirling Castle. We saw an aeroplane flying over Stirling Castle. At Callender, where we arrived about 11, we drove in a char-a-banc by Loch Venachar and Loch Achray, where we had lunch. then we drove through the Trossachs and got off the machine. We got on to a steamer on Loch Katrine, and we passed Ellen's Isle where the beautiful Ellen in the Lady of the Lake lived. On the left we saw Benvenue. On landing at Stronachlachar we proceeded by coach to Loch Lomond. On the way we passed Loch Anklet a very bleak dreary place. We gotdown at Inversnaid. Near this is Rob Roy's cave. I was nearly left behind. We had a beautiful trip nearly all down Loch Lomond. We stopped at several landing places on the way. We stayed in Glasgow at the Old Waverley Hotel, Sauchiehall Street. We did not like it.

Aug 31st. Daddie did some business. M, C and I went for a walk and bought some picture postcards. We left about 4 o'clock and went on board the Vulture? Blackbird at 6.

Sept 1st. We arrived at the North Wall about 8 a.m. It was a beautiful morning. We drove to the Standard Hotel [Harcourt Street] and had breakfast - at least some of us only took tea and toast! Then we left for Wicklow by the 10.30 train. We were very glad to arrive safely home though we had enjoyed our trip on the whole. It was certainly most interesting to see so many historical and interesting, besides beautiful, places.
