Acton brothers bring Rugby to Cheltenham
This plaque, on the east wall of a building just to the south of Cheltenham College chapel, records how the Acton brothers, Thomas, William and my great grandfather Charles, later Colonel Ball-Acton came from Rugby School, bringing with them the new game of rugby football. It reads:
NEAR THIS PLACE RUGBY football was first played at Cheltenham College brought here from School House - Rugby - by the brothers ACTON in 1844. Floreant.
The first inter-school Rugby Football match was played between Rugby and Cheltenham, Cheltenham beating Rugby. the 'Cheltenham Rules' were adopted by the Rugby Football Union in 1887.
